There is a commonly held belief that snails are slower than trains on land, but the help file specifically states: Under the ocean are trade shops that can only be reached by using giant fae snail drawn sealed underocean freight vessels. These are a type of freight that when on land act as a WAGON TRAIN but can also go right under the ocean. I am here to test the assertion that snails are slower than wagons. The longer the train the faster you can go but a train is slower at 4 or less players, around the same as normal covered wagons at 5-6 players, and faster at 7, even faster at 8, and insanely fast at 9 players. In my own words: 9 = Bot speed. Nearly impossible to break from speed alone. 8 = Efficient trader speed. Rare to break from speed unless someone isn't a hero/max stam. 7 = Faster than a train. High break risk. Doable if you find the right rhythm. 6 or Less = Just don't. Typically, I would do a short run from sea-to-land, as the values are generally terrible. Then grab the good values and dive back into the ocean as soon as possible to avoid land mob factions, as they are what really slow you down. For the purposes of this experiment, I did a short ocean-to-land run, then an extremely long and painful hike across the entire continent before diving back into the ocean near my final destination. The underocean to land run was uneventful. Just the way I like it. *Protip: When using multi-play for UO, set a timer to spam nn. *Protip: Go in a relatively straight line and wait for the form to regroup before changing direction. *Protip: Keep the form together when dealing with bottom-feeders, move 1 room, kill, repeat. The joys of trading across the continent are inversely proportionate to the number of mob factions encountered. During my long haul I encountered high-risk spiders, hell, a high-risk haunted forest, another high-risk forest, high-risk wolves, and another forest while still fighting wolves. Then I took a much needed break. Part two, I encountered hell, lions, more lions, moderate-risk wolves, and a moderate-risk haunted forest. *Protip: Get back in the water as fast as you can! MFs slow you down more than anything else. The snail train broke seven times for speed, and I was hunted twice by wilderness dragons. A nine hero snail train can move at a seven. Snails can be mixed with wagons to form the train, but the train moves as fast as its slowest member, or it breaks. *Protip: Have the slowest person lead. This will help minimize speed based breakages. The second section of underocean did have a minor piranha infestation, but yielded good profit. Verdict: Snails act like wagon trains, but are as slow as ... snails. All Rights Reserved. For more information contact: Webmistress: Soleil |
