Advice for the Noob-lorn: Ten Tips for Newbies
by Oakan

So you're a newbie. Welcome to my world. Well, my after-work world. I'm still something of a newbie myself. But I've learned a lot, made a bunch of friends, and had a great time. Medevia is a great community and the game is really focused on playing as a team. While you can have a lot of fun soloing, you'll find the best xp, the best gold, and the best banter if you get involved.

OK, I've been here for a couple of months now, long enough to begin to tap the riches that are Medievia. I've done lots of trade runs, bailed a few ships, been part of dozens of forms, and even led a few. On top of that I've learned a whole bunch of information I wish I'd known right from the start. So I'm going to pass on some sage advice based on my own recent newbie experiences.

  1. DO THE NEWBIE ZONES. First, you'll find some great equipment. Second, you're not as likely to die. Third, you'll find out why it is so important to read room descriptions.
  2. READ ROOM DESCRIPTIONS. I admit, when I first enter a zone, I like to just bash until I die, racking up xp as I go. But I've learned that the real secrets are in the room descriptions. That crack in the western wall? It just might be a hidden room.
  3. SEARCH. Dumb as it sounds, just typing search can help you find things you wouldn't otherwise. And be persistent. Sometimes you have to search several times to find something.
  4. AUTO QUEST. Don't miss this opportunity to get AQ points and learn how to run the quests. You don't HAVE to do them in your first or second classes, but eventually you will have to do AQs and they only get harder. Do the easy ones while you can. You'll learn new zones, get valuable information about how Med works, and have lots of adventures while you're at it. So read those brittle scrolls and ask those mobs so you can get going!
  5. READ THE HELP FILES. Duh.
  6. GET A GOOD CLIENT. Mudmaster 2000 seems to be the free client of choice. GET IT. Also, if you go to the Med website, you'll find some places where you can download scripts which will help you greatly.
  7. DARKNOMADS. Speaking of resources at the website, this is an excellent site for information about all things Medievia.
  8. JOIN A CLAN. I can't begin to tell you what a difference this makes. A good clan (meaning one that suits you, not necessarily one with the highest rankings) gives you a ready source of companionship, advice, forms, trade runs and other fun, and profitable, stuff. Try to find one that has lots of folks on when you are as Medevia is truly international and you can find folks from all over the world here all day and night. My clannies have helped me out with everything from money to equipment to new adventures. You're clannies will make your experience in this lively world all the more enjoyable.
  9. TRY EVERYTHING. Join a form, go on a trade run, board a ship, or just explore a new zone. The worst that can happen is you'll die. Something I've done 205 times to date. Death is another good reason to make friends. Some of them can resurrect you if you die and many of them can help you avoid death. But, if you spend your time avoiding death, you'll miss the thrill of fighting some of the greatest mobs around. I've played several muds over the years and NONE are as rich or as deeply textured as this one.
  10. EXPLORE. I think it would take a lifetime to do everything there is to do in Med. I'm pretty sure there are things here even Vryce doesn't know about. Don't stick to the same old zones....there are some real treasures to be found.
