  • Description:
The janitor hitched up his trousers and cautiously made his way toward the front door of the unassuming house. He knew the occupant by reputation only. His name was Briwe, and he was said to be a powerful enchanter with a foul temper. Normally, the janitor would not dare to interact with such a man, but Basalan paid the janitor to keep the Quarter clean, and there had been numerous complaints in the last few days about a terrible odor coming from Briwe's house. It was the janitor's duty to investigate.

He paused for a moment and took a deep breath before knocking on the door. The stench was almost unbearable, and he was sure that someone or something had died in the house. After a minute, he knocked again, a little more forcefully. Still, there was no response.

"Hello?" he called out. "Is anyone home?" After waiting for a moment, he shrugged and reached for the knob with a trembling hand. It was unlocked, and the door opened a few inches.

"Hello?" he called again. "I'm coming in!" Slowly, he pushed the door open. A wave of noxious air emanated from the house, and the janitor covered his nose with the back of his hand.

It took several seconds for his eyes to adjust to the dark interior of the house. What he saw disgusted him. Even for a man whose job was to clean the refuse of humanity, this was a shocking sight. Rotting food was strewn across the floor of the house. Large black rats stared back at him defiantly from the mess, their eyes glowing red. As he made his way inside, he disturbed the flies that crawled across the rot, and they buzzed about his head in an angry swarm.

Later in the day, the job was done. The food was disposed of, the rats chased out, the windows opened, and the air made fresh. There was no sign of Briwe anywhere. A neighbor stopped by to say that it had been several weeks since anyone had seen him, but that it was not unusual for him to be gone for weeks at a time. The janitor made one more tour of the house, lingering for a moment at a desk. It was covered with papers and illustrations. Much of the writing was beyond the janitor's comprehension, but he was able to recognize the illustrations. Most of them were maps of various areas throughout the great continent of Medievia, though one map was unfamiliar to him. It depicted a rocky plateau and a village surrounded by forest.

The map was labeled: The Kingdom of Yrg.
