Fae Crabs differ from all the other mob factions and are classified as “from afar”. You can detect them with the spell sense afar. Their presence will also be reported on the Adventure channel.
Unlike all the other MFs found on the oceans of Medievia, the fae gained will go to the players killing the crabs and not the ship. The ship will still gain gold for every crab that dies.
What ship should I use?
While you can use any ship for crabs, many captains suggest using a cheap “disposable” ship. Sloops and sitharians captured from Khrait would be considered disposable.
Crabs can cause tremendous damage very quickly, especially if you spend too much time in the fae patch. It has been said that it is more economical to sail out to kill the crabs and then to let your ship sink when done instead of returning to dock by way of seadragon. I would not suggest trying to kill serpents.
How many players are needed?
It is advisable to try to use at least a full form of players for this adventure. Fae crabs are one of the best ways of obtaining fae available to you in the game.
How do you find Fae Crab patches?
When a patch spawns, it will be reported on the adventure channel. The DM reports the coordinates of where the patch is located.
DM: A large swarm of fae crabs has been spotted on the ocean at 1742 by 121
This particular patch is located NNE of Trellor. You can the location by entering the coordinates into the website game map or by calculating it yourself.
Med City is located at the coordinates 1000 by 1000 with the NW corner being 0x0 and the SE corner being 2000 by 2000. The first number represents west to east 0-2000 and the second north to south 0-2000.
You can also cast sense afar to get a general idea of where the crab patches are located.
I have assembled a team and set sail. What now?
Fae crabs appear on the map as a large area of magenta in the ocean. They are not to be underestimated! As you sail through the patch, crabs will jump aboard the ship. The closer to the center of the patch, the more crabs will board. They will also damage the ship. It is not advisable to sail directly through the middle; everyone will die, and your ship will sink.
A good tactic is to weave in and out along the edge of the patch as the crabs are cleared off ship. Enter the patch briefly, scoop up some crabs and move out of the patch while the form dispenses with the nasties.
As more crabs are scooped up, the patch will get smaller. Once around 500 crabs have been killed, the patch will dissipate. Killing them will become more challenging as the patch gets smaller, and you get closer to the center.
The more crabs in a room, the more damage they will cause, so try to kill them quickly.
- When 2+ crabs are in a rigging room, they will damage the ship.
- When 4+ crabs are in a deck room, they will damage the ship.
- When 8+ crabs are in a hold room, they will damage the ship.
Crabs in the rigging are bad, but not as bad as crabs in the hull! Keep those hatches closed.
If you stay in the patch too long and manage to pick up too many crabs, your only option may be to move your form into the rigging and have everyone c tremor. Tremor will cause them to fall and keep the numbers manageable. They will of course also get fall damage.
Shield room will be moderately effective at managing the numbers, but they will break through eventually.
Crabs are also affected by the weather. During lightning storms, they will flock to the rigging, but during fires or magic storms they will take damage and try to get below decks. If you happen to be under a storm from afar, the crabs will be much stronger.
The patch is gone. Now what?
As we said before, your ship does not gain fae when crabs are killed. While some captains will now choose to dock especially if you have used a Man O’War other captains would recommend letting your ship sink. If you choose to dock, you will probably need to repair your ship before you will be able to gain speed or call a sea dragon. Once repaired, call a seadragon (call seadragon) and dock at your port of choice.
How do I let my ship sink?
Before you do this, loot your ship chest! Don't forget! The gold should at the very least cover your costs of the excursion.
If you still have crabs aboard, open your hatches and simply wait. You can leave and eventually it will sink. Alternatively, you can chum a serpent, attack it and again let it sink.
